After watching your review and looking at a lot of other reviews, I finally decided to buy my first R L Allan bible. I managed to snag a 63 Sovereign Longprimer that was marked as a special purchase due to some issues with the gold foil. The issues aren't really anything to be concerned about. I'm absolutely blown away by the quality of this thing. It is an absolute work of art. I love it. I'm not KJV only, but I use it as my primary bible, alongside a NKJV, as I prefer the Textus Receptus over the critical text. I also use a couple of Bibles based on the Byzantine text as well. This brings me to the one disappointment that I have found with the 63 Longprimer. I have come across in the references instances with 'cf' which says 'indicates apparent contradictions or inconsistencies', and also such as 1 Tim (no pun intended) 6:5 which the margin says 'the best manuscripts omit'. This to me is highly disappointing, and it is one thing I definitely don't like as it appears to attack the integrity of the text. It definitely suggests they don't think they have printed the best manuscript! Cambridge Bibles are far superior in this respect. I am going to have to learn to ignore these when I come across them, but for me it takes the shine off what is otherwise an absolutely beautiful version of God's word.
Hi Tim, I got the 63 from allan at a discount, because of imperfections. That I can't find. But great Bible, and a worthwhile purchase. Great review, thanks. Rick Meunier/ Harrisville RI
Ordered mine yesterday, absolutely cannot wait for it to arrive. I’m determined that this will be my “the one”. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money on premium bibles over the past year, I’ve given like 3 or four away. And I will be giving away a couple more after this one comes in. Y’all I’m not even joking when I ask you to pray for me that I’ll be content with this one and only this one.
@@Belak-gq3wt Nope. It was far too large for my taste lol, I was able to return it for a refund however. My daily lately has been my Schuyler NKJV PSQ.
I was looking to get this exact one on their main website. Come to find out, they just sold out on this color. Do you have any clue when the re-stock of this Bible will be available again?
Good review. The black goatskin with the navy ribbons looks great; understated but you know how good it will be. I really wish Allan would do their own ESV edition something like this. In petrol blue, I'd have a tough time NOT just buying one.
Well, what do you know, I reviewed the 62 yesterday!, so this textblock looks the same, and the only difference is that the 63 has goatskin with full yapp. I love the KJV 62, Tim, and after seeing your Petrol Blue (in a different translation?) recently I had to get it :-)
@@timwildsmith Minor differences...boils down to which skin you like best and how much yapp! Thanks for showing that Petrol Blue because I love mine and that Meriva calfskin is divine. God bless you!
I just purchased this Bible in purple. It is the first Allan I've owned. The cover and binding quality are absolutely beautiful. But I am a bit disappointed the text block for two reasons: 1. The pages do not lay flat like my other premium Bibles. There is a curvy "wave" in the paper along the top and bottom edges, and turning pages makes a crackling noise. I assumed it was caused by the thick paper used, but I don't see the same issue in your video. 2. The purple color of the art gilding bleeds into the pages quite a bit. I contacted Allan and they told me that this was not a defect but was common with the purple color. Anyway, the Bible is really amazing, and I am glad I bought it, but I don't see similar issues in your video and wondered if you had any experience with any of this.
Richard I know it's a bit late but the bleeding is a defect. It's not common with "purple" but it is common with Charfleet (the company that bound it and applied the dye). Charfleet messes up art gilding quite often. It's a known fact, even admitted by Allan, that Charfleet can only work with gold gilding and red and purple dyes. They can't work with silver gilding or blues or other colors you would find with Jongbloed or Chant (the previous company that Charfleet replaced). The bleed has a lot to do with how the dye is applied and the type of paper it's applied to. Charfleet I believe applies it by hand, whereas Jongbloed uses a spray. It's possible to apply it by hand and not have bleed but it's common with Charfleet and even some Chants to have some bleed.
@@timwildsmith It's phenomenal! I can see why people call it "sumptuous". I typically use the CSB as my go-to, but love to read the Allan aloud at night by the fire.
Jay the 5WM (wide margin) has much thicker paper (45 GSM) and uses a completely different text block. The Sovereign (62/63) that you see in this video is a Longprimer. The 5WM is a Brevier Clarendon. The 5WM actually has italics for supplied words whereas the Longprimer does not. The Longprimer and the Brevier Clarendon also use completely different references and footnotes. The Longprimer uses footnotes from the actual text of the ERV (English Revised Versison, commonly called the RV) in a lot of places. I prefer the Brevier Clarendon over the Longprimer for several reasons, however the Longprimer is a much nicer more comfortable read.
@@timwildsmith I might have to sell a couple Bibles and get this. Charfleets quality has so improved it makes me excited to see how they have bound this edition.
@@timwildsmith My wife just got me a new one in Navy Blue and I can't believe I'm saying this but I like it better than the Chant one I used to have it's just fantastic!

Can't wait for the purple version of this to come out. Love your videos
Thanks for watching!!
I just bought it today. On the website they say they are using 40 gsm paper. The 62 still has 38gsm
This 63 along with the 53 are just gorgeous!

Tim what is your favorite Longprimer? Just watched this video, figured I would ask. Is it a particular colorway or a particular number (e.g., 53)?

I have not. Never heard of it, actually.

Black and blue on an Allan is just classic.

Hey Richard. I have not had an experience like that with any of my Allan Bibles, but I know the “crackle” of fairly common.

the paper in the 63 is 40 gsm not 38gsm (4;5)
They’ve used 40 and 38 in different runs.
How is the compared to Allan's Wide Margin?
If you're talking about the KJV Brevier Clarendon Bible, that one has thicker paper and much larger margin space.

Which Longprimer did you settle on as “The One?”
The 53 is just right.
They have 5WM Allan and you have not mentioned that one
The 5WM is a Clarendon, not a Longprimer.
